Trader Joe’s Best Frozen Meals [Tips from a Dietitian]

Trader Joe's Best Frozen Meals

Continuing the conversation from my previous blog post, 5 Healthy Frozen Meals Trader Joe’s, this post will show you how to combine frozen ingredients to build a balanced meal. Trader Joe’s best frozen meals are ones you feel good about keeping in your freezer for your go-to meals during busy weeks.

Sometimes we just don’t want a bowl to microwave, but instead want something from the air fryer, stovetop, or oven. Knowing how to combine protein, carbs, and non-starchy vegetables is key to building a balanced meal.

As I always talk about during one-to-one sessions, this takes practice. Be kind to yourself while you’re giving more thought into not just what’s in the freezer aisle but how to put it all together. Whether your goals are around weight, blood sugar regulation, or simply getting food on the table, you’ll find some ideas here for Trader Joe’s best frozen meals you can count on.

Quick review

Reading nutrition labels is a key component to understanding how a meal will fit into your goals when it comes to protein, carbs and fiber. I discussed this in more detail in my last blog post and I recommend taking a minute to review how to balance the plate.

Counting macros isn’t necessary and good news for those of you who just want to look at food groups! The balanced plate consists of a quarter protein, quarter carbs and quarter non-starchy veggies, with some healthy fats thrown into the mix if you’d like. We’re going to do that here while doing some menu planning with Trader Joe’s best frozen meals to keep you going this season.

A Simple 3-Step Framework for Building Frozen Meals

1. Pick your protein
2. Add a carb
3. Add non-starchy vegetables (aim to prioritize these when you can)

These meals are especially helpful if you:

  • Feel too busy to cook most nights
  • Want to improve blood sugar balance
  • Are working on sustainable weight loss
  • Need quick, reliable meal options
  • Feel overwhelmed in the grocery store

Common Mistakes When Choosing Frozen Meals

Even with the best intentions, here are a few things I see often:

1. Not enough protein or vegetables
Many frozen meals are carb-heavy, which can result in blood sugars spikes and feeling unsatisfied.

2. Skipping vegetables
Easy to overlook—especially at breakfast or with convenience meals.

3. Overthinking it
You don’t need perfection—just aim for balance most of the time.

Now let’s put this into practice with simple, balanced meal ideas you can build using Trader Joe’s best frozen meals!

Breakfast

This is a great option whether you’re starting your day or having breakfast-for-dinner. Chicken sausage patties, hash browns and fire roasted peppers and onions are all excellent items to keep in the freezer. Veggies can sometimes be tough to add in at the start of the day, but with this combination it’s an easy yes!

If you keep eggs in the fridge, this would be another great protein to add to this mix.

Take a look at the label for carb serving size to guide you in how much a serving of hash browns are. If you’re looking for a quicker option, premade hash brown patties, seasoned potato wedges or Spicy Spuds are also available in the freezer section.

Breakfast “On-the-Go” Option

Are you someone who likes to take breakfast on the road? Or would rather drink a beverage vs eat a meal? Smoothies can make really great breakfast options if we know how to balance them right. Again, focus on the balanced plate method- adding protein, carbs, veggies and healthy fats.

Trader Joe’s Fruits & Greens Smoothie Blend is a great option with a mix of fruits and vegetables. It doesn’t include protein or healthy fats on its own, so make sure to add a serving or two. This could be a non-frozen ingredient such as nut butter, Greek yogurt or protein powder.

Or, we could be eating protein on the side of the smoothie. Think hard-boiled egg, protein bar, handful of nuts/seeds. If you want to make your own fruit combination, Trader Joe’s has a great selection of frozen fruit to add to your smoothie or yogurt bowl. Don’t forget the frozen spinach for your smoothie too!

Lunch

So many options to choose from! Where to start? Ask yourself how much time you have, if you need to prepare this ahead of time to take to work or if you’re eating at home. Remembering the plate balance is key.

Looking for more of a Mediterranean flair? The beef kebabs with falafel are an excellent choice, combining with a frozen veggie such as broccoli. Heat the kebabs and falafel in the air fryer while steaming the broccoli on the stove top or microwave. Drizzle some olive oil, salt and pepper over the broccoli and you have yourself a balanced lunch in about 10 minutes.

If you have a little more time, turkey burgers take about 20 min in the air fryer. Just enough time to cook the brussels and pop rice in the microwave. You have an easy bowl with protein, carbs and non-starchy veggies. Maybe your favorite sauce too!

Dinner

Again, countless opportunities to find your favorite Trader Joe’s best frozen meals to support you when you’re not wanting to spend a lot of time cooking. We all have busy weeks and eating healthy, frozen ingredients can be a lifesaver and boost your mood.

Let me be clear. Eating frozen meals does not mean you’re cheating or doing anything wrong. If you’re cooking for yourself or your family weekly, we need breaks. Yes, we need to eat, however, choosing to make a meal out of the frozen section is usually healthier and less expensive than eating out.

Date night? Plan a shopping trip to Trader Joe’s together to pick out your favorite frozen ingredients to create a meal and maybe even find a sweet treat to share as well.

Pasta

Trader Joe’s frozen pasta section takes up almost half the aisle, there’s got to be at least one type of pasta that pleases you! From linguini to ravioli to gnocchi (I know, technically not a pasta) combine with a frozen veggies such as mushrooms, green beans or asparagus.

These options will have some protein, but if you’re looking for more, Trader Joe’s has frozen chicken, frozen shrimp, frozen turkey or beef meatballs. Or if you’re not feeling pasta, a great gluten free option is choosing one of their frozen rice varieties with these protein and veg combo.

Fish

Frozen cod or tilapia are two of my favorites for lunch or dinner. Two fillets of cod can meet your protein and carb needs, just add a vegetable to round out the meal. The tilapia is slightly less in carbs, 26g, so feel free to add another 15 grams of carbs such as a corn salsa as pictured. Cook for 10-13 minutes in the air fryer while you steam broccoli or green beans. Your meal is done and balanced.

Chicken

Sometimes you just want to have a comforting meal of chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. The chicken breast tenderloins are a convenient option to toss in the air fryer while you heat the frozen mashed potatoes and green beans in the microwave or on the stovetop.

Do you know Trader Joe’s has frozen scallion pancakes? These make a delicious carb alternative to rice. Pairing these with the frozen Beef and Broccoli would be a budget friendly dinner. And you get to try something fun!

Flatbread

When it comes to flatbreads, I rarely eat them on their own. This is a great time to add extra protein, veggies and toppings you have in your fridge.

If you wanted to stick with only frozen ingredients, make sure to pick up a bag of frozen veg to have alongside the flatbread. Better yet, toss a couple of the chicken tenderloins in the air fryer while this is in the oven for extra protein.

Take a look at the recommended serving size for the flatbread to make sure you’re staying close to the carb recommendations of 30-45g/meal. These mushroom flatbreads have a bit more protein and make quick, easy, delicious meals!

If you’re wondering how this looks in real life, here’s a simple way to put these ideas together:
